From the newspaper article:
BNSF spokesman Gus Melonas said the train, which consisted of 110 cars en route from Laurel to Shelby, entered into a side rail line by grain bins along Gerber Road. After the engineers on the freight train applied the brakes, it collided with a stationary maintenance train, causing the derailment.
Sounds to me like either vandalism (someone tampering with a switch) or a negligent employee who forgot to restore the switch for mainline movement (shades of the NS incident at Graniteville, SC). If it's the latter, expect the FRA to come out with a bunch of additional rules (one top of the ones spawned from Graniteville) regarding positions of mainline switches in unsignaled territory.
