Superelevation works when trains operate at the speed the elevation was intended for, when the speeds are too low, excessive weight can build up on lower rail causing excessive rail wear and excessive tie wear on the lower edge of the curve. If the slow trains are heavy unit trains, this situation is greatly magnified and can cause the rails to spread over time.
