All other factors aside...right now the YW is basically completely dependent on the movement of the veneer traffic from the Timber Products mill in Yreka that goes north to a TP plant in the Grants Pass area. The railroad only has this traffic due to the same day service that YW and CORP provide. If CORP closes the south end the YW interchange will be protected, but the veneer traffic will go back to trucks and what little other traffic the railroad will have left will not be able to support continued operations. This exact scenario played out when the summit tunnel collapsed- the veneer traffic went back to trucks, the YW declared bankruptcy and was for all intents and purposes a dead railroad when the tunnel finally reopened. The present management has done an outstanding job of pulling the railroad back from the brink and making it a viable operation again. I hope that they are able to continue.
