Dan didn't like diamond lanes 30 years ago, he's been opposed to the incremental approach to more and better rail service in California proposed and implemented by Caltrans and Amtrak, and he's opposed to HSR.
No doubt there's a public transportation alternative he might support, but no one's found it yet. Let's just keep driving alone in our cars, until the last drop of oil is used up.
HSR is probably premature. An incremental approach to Amtrak service in California and around the nation IS implementable and necessary. Interstate Trains are nearly always full, the demand is there for at least two trains a day on every route.
Why spend billions you don't have (and the politicians would rather spend on "splendid little wars") when the existing system can be augmented for less than the interest on HSR bonds.
