An export coal facility in Coos Bay was proposed by Espee in the 1980's. Although many bridges were strengthened, the export coal market shrank, so no facilities were ever built. While the line does not have a significant grade for loaded ( Espee Eastbound ) trains, there are many twisty bits in the coast range to contend with.
