Well, now it's actually 10 hours off undisturbed, meaning 11'30" from tie up to back on duty, but they can still call you to CT deadhead. So, you can burn 10-11 hours on dead freight, get to the hotel at 03:00 and get called at 05:30 to go back on duty at 07:00 to deadhead back. Good luck getting any real sleep deadheading, and so forget the long drive home being safe, because your eyes are on fire trying to watch the road after being awake for 22-25 hours.
All that static about the RSIA making huge changes was comlete and utter bullshit. The ONLY thing that changed to help the rest issue is the implementation of 10 hours undisturbed. Even that was tampered with by the railroad lobbyists: They can still flip you back on a fast turn if you've had just 4 hours off at the hotel, just like they've been doing for years. All they have to do is notify you in advance, and make sure all your hours of service total less than 12.
Nothing changes. Except now we've got seperate passenger class of service rest rules? How is that supposed to make a bit of difference if the window train is rested, but I fall asleep and slide through the red block and plow into their happy rested asses?
The FRA never seems to have a real grasp on this ancient issue, but they sure seem real happy about covert rules testing observations. What a friggin' disgrace.
