The Old Pole Burner's theory seems to make perfect sense. There has got to be maximum efficiency in transfering containers from the ship directly to rail cars and then rolling them right out of town before doing any sorting. Because of land costs, Lathrop seem like a perfect place to take the containers off the rail cars to transfer to trucks for delivery all over Northern California. One thing that I don't get is if the containers are to continue by rail to distant points, would they be transferred to other rail cars at Lathrop? Are c.o.f.c. cars uncoupled and classified into multiple cuts for various destinations? I know that c.o.f.c. cars are made in singles, articulated triples, and articulated quintuples. Are these long cars able to be classified in yards the way that single cars are? An ignoramus would like to know.
