As I recall - these have a "crash management" design. The front end is designed to crumple and absorb much of an impact - to a degree. Many of the modern passenger locomotives have plastic noses (actually fiberglass) to get that sleek modern look without actually having to weld steel in that shape.

Since these are clearly used in push-pull, and the seats would be facing forward when in pull mode. I imagine the coaches still have 50/50 seating.
