I certainly can't speak for the economic/employment future (tho I think it is grim), but, I believe my son has a really good grip on the future and how he plans to fit in with it, I believe there will be a major use for his major.
From my perspective, a parent tends to forget that their child(ren)grow(s) up, and becomes a truly functioning adult. And yes, I am sure that he is aware of who provides what, just as I am sure he is aware of his student loan obligations.
