Now - Now!
It is reasonable that people in general are currently confused; might even get so confused that they actually do put a bunch of "pinko commie socialists" (was that the phrase?) in the White House. But isn't that just exactly why some of our more power-greedy politicans, and the media, are so willing to confuse us.
Yes, there is widespread scientific consensus that global warming is an absolute fact, based upon the geological record. The Earth has been warming for several hundred years now - about a half a degree per century on average.
And yes, Al Gore's claim of a correlation between atmospheric carbon and warming, is reflected in that same geological record over hundreds of thousands of years.
But what he Conveniently "Forgets" to tell us (same as other hysterical politians and their media minions) is that for hundreds of thousands of years, the rise of atmospheric carbon has followed temperature rises by several decades, not preceded them. It is no different this time either.
Since an effect cannot precede its cause, increased CO2 at the surface IS NOT THE CAUSE of global warming. Indeed, increased carbon at the surface may well turn out to be a boone to plant life, as it has been in past geological ages - maybe even modern agriculture will benefit. We might even be able to feed our growing population yet (Oops - that wasn't politially correct either!).
What is the cause of the current warming then? Look to several solar based natural cycles, which do correlate very well, and in the proper order. Possibly contributing in the current warming trend, is a continuing recovery from what some scientists refer to as a "Mini Ice Age" that occured during the middle ages (years after the celtic migrations from the Caucauses); bought on by massive decades long volcanic eruptions in several places (most notably - the Icelandic Trench)
The point:
We need to calm down a little and quit picking on each other - especally fellow railroaders and fans. While it is morally important that we always seek to do better in being judicious and respectful in our use of natural resources; the world will not end, or be harmed, by reasonable use of them. WATCH OUT when scary messages come from power mongering politicians!
