Since around 1968 the railroads began using more mobil equipment from contractors to do rerailing, this equipment is more flexible and can clean up an derailement and allow servie to be retored faster. As other poster have stated it does save the railroad money not to have 10 to 20 more people on the payroll and have to maintain equipment but all Hulcher employees are well paid union members, just not railroad union members. As a railroader who has cleaned up derailments since 1969 when they are needed you are sure glad to see all the trucks and yellow cat iron roll up to the derailment.

They have to be rolling within 1 hour of the call or sooner if they are at the shop and they work as long as it takes to get the derailment cleaned up and the track reopend.

They also do MOW work and non emergency work railroad work, floods, and other natural disasters for railroads governments and private industry. They are a Hazmat response company.

see below a some of video's of Hulcher in action . They do a great job and get it done fast
