Monitor Calibration

With all the debate below, here is the question I have: if I am interested in getting my pictures as accurate as possible in terms of color and lighting, what software is recommended and does the software calibrate it for you? I never even bother to edit images on my new laptop because I know the colors are 100% wrong on it. And I find the histogram to only be of use in near perfect lighting, which 75% of my shots aren't. Part of the problem is I am red/green color-blind, so manual adjustments aren’t practical for me. Thanks!
