If you want to run with the big dogs (commercial printers who color manage to SWOP/GraCOL standards), gonna have to buy into some hardware too, like an Apple Cinema HD display and an X-Rite Display colorimeter. The latter device, known in the industry as a "puck" is placed over your monitor to read and calibrate, taking into account ambient room light in the process.
