Feedback from last night's meeting can be found at cdapress.com. Construction of the transfer station is to begin this month, but the jail plan won't be voted on until late next year. Rabanco and Kootenai County originally proposed a rail transfer site at Ramsey (out in the woods east of Rathdrum, Idaho) some ten years ago, but that was nixed partly by local opposition and mostly by BNSF's desire not to add another industy switch to its main line. After the Ramsey trash plan died away, they wound up adding a spur for a lumber reload at West Ramsey anyway. The site at Hauser Junction on the branch makes great sense: no need to tie up the main while switching, within the regular territory of an existing local, zoned industrial, etc. Sad to see more development anywhere on the Rathdrum Prairie, though. GN Goat, you mentioned trash from Canada. Would any of that be gondolas of junk like I've seen coming south on the UP via Eastport the past year? Not just scrap metal, but toilets and other construction waste.
