At the 2010 SP Historical & Technical Society convention in Sacramento, the keynote speakers were 2 Espee operations managers who spoke at length of Rotary operations on the hill, both pre- & post - merger. Sorry I don't have their names handy; however they were both 25 year veterans of Donner Pass snow fighting. They had few good things to say regarding the new management from Omaha showing up in sneakers to ride the rotarys and commenting about " ... how we do things in the Blue Mountains."
Both these ex - Espee managers, realizing that their expertise would leave with their impending retirements, decided to hold classes for newer employees on how to run the spreaders & rotarys. Kudos to these fine men for sharing their years of experience, when they could have simply walked away & left the new guys hanging.
The impending rebuilding of the rotarys, as described in a Winterail show last Saturday, is a sign that Omaha still holds them in value to continued safe train operations on The Hill.
