Problem with that MRL/UP connection at Sandpoint is this: westbound detouring train would have to pull past the connection, then back through the connection at a crawl, then proceed south on UP. Would tie up traffic on Hwy 200 and several adjacent crossings for quite some time. Not exactly the kind of thing you'd want to do with a 105-car grain train or 130-car potash train, DPUs on the rear or not, several times a day. But hey, I work in the printing industry; what do I know about railroading?
