The hopers that I have seen in grain service have had a security device on the top and bottom hatches that resembled a zip tie with a printed serial number on one end. I often see empty cars with these broken or cut "zip ties" on the hatches, but I never see empty in service cars with any sort of lock. I doubt that cars in storage are ever locked (though I have no proof of this claim). Regardless of the realities, in my opinion you have an excellent plot device! Complicating the investigation of the murder is that perhaps the body was dumped in the car before it was moved into storage?
