I guess I would take only one exception to Rollin's comment re the Kingman project. ( this is not easy since Rollin is alumni) I was privileged to be invited to several BNSF Shortline meetings where we told that BNSF was concerned about the "last mile" of a railcars journey and anything and everything the BNSF could do to eliminate that portion of the trip was their (BNSF's) goal. If the burden fell to the shipper or receiver it appeared to make no difference as long as the pattern fit the BNSF plan. It was called in those days "managing the customer's expectations". This may have changed since the last meeting I attended but so far I have seen no evidence to support a change in BNSF plans.
Kingman like most Shortline operations will hopefully make the customers feel welcome and work with them to insure smooth service when they need it and as often as they need it.
With very few exceptions I firmly believe that where a Shortline steps into these situations both increased traffic and new customers will follow. The Shortline operation will also provide the existing customers large, small, and hopefully new, with local personal contact and help in all areas. This type of operation benefits both Class I and Shortline. We will have to trust that the new operators, Patriot Rail, have made the proper agreements with the BNSF and the customers to insure and a long and prosperous lease.
