Quote:My assumption is that loaded westbound coal and/or grain trains would use the Columbia River line, and the empties would go east over Stampede
This is basically the current traffic flow over Stampede Pass. Empties East, with the crew being rubber - tired back West. Until a few years ago, the VBEPAS ( Vancouver, BC to Pasco, WA ) mixed freight would be routed over Stampede in both directions. Now this train is a rarity, with the Westbound / Northbound ( mostly empties ) occasionally being routed via Stampede.
Auburn Yard is seeing a bit of use nowadays as a holding yard for Northbound loaded coal trains waiting for a slot on the line between Everett & Vancouver, BC. Also commonly seen are loaded grain trains yarded until needed @ the Elliott Bay Grain Elevator & ocean ship loading facility. As well, empty S/B grain trains will be yarded @ Auburn until it is time to send them East over Stampede or South to Portland.
