That would be somewhat akin to the way the SP San Joaquin Division ran when I was there, in the late Sixties: "home" was Tracy, and crews ran north to Roseville, or down to Fresno, then usually 177 miles between Roseville/Fresno. Often we'd be out for two to three days before getting home. There was also the Westside line through Los Banos to Fresno. It made for an interesting "triangle" division but kept us away quite a lot.

There was a lot of deadheading out of Fresno back to Tracy on Greyhound. I would usually grab whatever freight train was headed that way and ride a rear unit or the crummy, and cash in the Greyhound ticket. Didn't much care for riding the "dog".

My fiance wasn't too keen on my being gone all the time, and I eventually left the railroad for a career that was easier on married life.

If the BNSF would make an effort not to hold the crews past their rest at the away terminals, they theoretically could be out, around and back fairly quickly, though the distances involved might work against that.
