One point I forgot to make is that blaze orange poised close to the track can be a bit distressing for some crews. Rounding a curve at 60mph and suddenly seeing some blob of orange a half mile away down the tangent could make one's life or career quickly flash by. As in, "Oh XXXX, are we about to roll right past a flagger up ahead or what?" When shooting in the fall or winter, if I'm set up near the track, I'll drop my blaze orange behind a bush just before the train appears. I'll keep myself visible enough that crews can see who I am and what I'm doing, but spare them the shock of a big, bright, false warning when they first spot me. When set up away from the track, up on a hill, etc., then of course the blaze orange stays on.
