First, as for assorted "vermin" that's a pretty dim view of humanity you have. I've been railfanning for nearly 40 years and never felt a need for a firearm. I have railfanned in rural areas of Pennsylvania, Colorado and California as well as Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Columbus (OH), Denver, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Oakland, Pittsburgh, Portland, Reno, Sacramento, San Jose, Santa Barbara, Tacoma and Washington DC. Only once, in Washington, was I in a threatening situation and that was checking out an abandoned trolley barn. Otherwise, I've never had any problems.
But I've never railfanned along the V & T - should I assume that the area along the V & T is more prone to crime than the cities I've mentioned?
Second, I am a firm believer that keeping and bearing arms is a collective right associated with serving in a militia per the complete wording of the Second Amendment - I don't care what the Supreme Court's Heller decision says.
