Forty-one years ago, March 1971. Amtrak was still six weeks away, we were still sending young Americans to be slaughtered in Viet Nam, and it would still be six months until Don McLean released "American Pie". The SP had been trying to abandon its oldest named train, "The Del Monte" for years but on this March afternoon, torpedo boat #3004 was sliding thru Marina, CA on its way to Monterey, seemingly oblivious to the world around it. In tow, a single coach and parlor car #2982, a sister to Bill Hatrick's "Overland".
