When someone contacts UP's Customer Service Center and says they want to ship something (in this case, a passenger car) from Point A to Point B, they will be given information about the scheduled trains the car would need to ride, along with the routing, any movement restrictions, and a price quote. As I mentioned in the initial post to this thread, UP currently does not operate any scheduled trains between Newark and Oakland, thus the routing it's taking.
Yesterday's empty IM train was what's called a REPO movement, and would not be offered for a shipment like this.
The car is now in Roseville and should ride the MRVOA that arrives Oakland early Thursday morning.
