Matter of fact, as I typed those words I recalled the fallen ceiling and the subsequent hoo ha. Of course the story of the Center for Performing Arts is pretty funny in itself. In 1967 I went to Tucson with several other Junior Leaguers to the annual convention and we toured Frank Lloyd Wrights Taliesin West---they of course had done the original design for the CPA and proudly showed us the drawings, not knowing that at that very minute there was an ongoing war over exactly where the damn thing was to be located. Once that was settled and construction began, cost concerns arose and some "things were changed" by the city denizens, like walls of glass suddenly were made brick and gawd knows what else. Then it opened and ceiling fell in, perhaps because of the tweaking of the original plans? and then Anna Mouskouri came to town and during her concert the fans in the balcony set up a harmonic convergence and the balcony nearly came down. Locating the CPS directly under the landing path for the airport was just one of the stupidities involved with it. Recall that a major donation was made by the owners of the Murky for the Ridder Lounge and the Ridder building, next to the Fairmont, is located on the site originally intended for the CPA. Isn't that a coincidence?? :-)
