I don't know when Caltrain issued its first timetable, but Sunday Oct. 25, 1981 was the last day of SP-numbered trains. On Monday, October 26, the commutes started running with Caltrain's two-digit numbering scheme. I have a shot of an SDP45 powering the first Caltrain #27. It felt a little weird to be standing in the pre-dawn darkness looking at the big engine carrying the number of one of SP's most famous passenger trains in its number boards. Of course the Overland Limited was long gone by the time the SDP45s arrived, but I loved the irony!

Coincidently, Oct. 25, 1981 was also the first run of Amtrak's short-lived Spirit of California.
