That is a nice article.
Some of my rare miles would be:
Amtrak's North Coast Hiawatha and National Limited. Portions of both of these routes are either abandoned or dormant.
VIA's Atlantic route.
A May 1992 ride on a Wheeling & Lake Erie inspection train which included the West End branch linking to the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie.
1999 NRHS Feather River Excursion. Yes, some excursions through Feather River Canyon have been run since then, but for one reason or another, I wasn't able to make them. Despite the late departure from Sacramento and the unattractive diesel substituting for 3985 (I would have been fine with E-units or even SD50s), it remains one of my favorite trips.
A 2000 circle trip excursion on the DM & IR with 261. To the best of my knowledge, this was the last public excursion before the DM & IR was merged into CN.
A 2000 trip on the former Erie between Meadville and Corry, PA behind New York & Lake Erie FPA4s.
A 2006 Harrisburg - Renovo, PA excursion with the PRR E-units. Although NS's Buffalo Line is still intact, I heard this was a very difficult excursion to organizate and would not be surprised if it is never offered again.
The 2011 NRHS Stampede Pass excursion with 4449. One of the most scenic lines in Washington State. Hopefully this will not be the last such trip.
"Collecting" rare mileage is one of my favorite parts of the hobby. However, I have little interest in riding on tracks with limited scenic qualities or those where the track limits speeds to 10 - 15 mph on flatlands.
