Why not leave CA?
CA, despite a few problems (like most other places?), is still a wonderful place to live, and is the greatest state to be a railfan, or railroader in.
CA has some of the best of American railroading, from the Mountains to the Sea, from Short Lines-to Class One- from Freight to Passenger, from some of the best Tourist Lines, to some of the best rail Museums. At Fullerton you can have a beer and burger and see nearly 100 commute, intercity, and intermodal trains pass by each day. Too bad we can't do that at San Berdoo, too?
Where else in America do you get to see high mountain passes complete with snowsheds and beachside commuter stations complete with surfboards and palms? Where else can you whale watch from a train? Wine trains, to rides through Lemon Groves, to rides through Redwoods, on trolley's, and behind steamers, CA has an array of railroading for every train lovers taste.
CA is a living history of American railroads on a grand scale. If you like freight there's plenty of freight, from stacks, to unit trains to trona, to locals. If you like to ride trains, you can get on one in most major cities. And, every city of decents size in CA has a pretty decent set of transit options, from the cable cars and funiculars, to Metros or LRT, and CA is building more.
If we could fix the CHSRA mess, I think we could have at least hourly and half hourly service to most major cities 24/7, including up both the Valley and the Coast corridors, for a much more reasonable price. And, CA people seem to think it's better than sitting in gridlock and have been willing to support a modern rail system. So, CA with a few warts, seems to be a pretty good place for all kinds of trains.
Maybe, that why I love CA and CA railroading.
CA is bad mouthed a lot, but did you check the tempurature today up in the shale belt?
