I was fortunate to attend the University of California at Santa Barbara in the late 1970s. Beautiful scenery, mild weather and beautiful women. Oh yes, the SP Coast Line, too.
After, I graduated, I worked for a couple of years in mid-western cities, went to graduate school in the Mid-West, then worked in the Northeast. During that time, I interviewed for a position in California, but due to a death in the family, I told the potential employers I was no longer available for the position.
Ironically, the rail scene got much better after I left with more added trains to Santa Barbara and even further north (west?) to San Luis Obispo. I skipped a class to see 4449 with the Freedom Train pass through Goleta and now 4449 is in Daylight colors. Light rail systems have opened up in several major California cities and even Los Angeles now has respectably sized rail transit system (this was unheard of in the 1970s).
Lower State Street in Santa Barbara has improved considerably, too.
I live in Pennsylvania now and while this state offers a lot in the way of rails, I find the California rail scene much more interesting. Since 1993, I have traveled back to California every 2 or 3 years for professional meetings and to see friends and to enjoy the Golden State rail scene. I have enjoyed several excursions including a ride through the Feather River Canyon, a trip behind SP 2472 and a ride on Muni.
I am very aware of California's challenges, but what state doesn't have difficulties?
Bob2: thanks for your right-on comments.
By the way, for anyone who is interested, the price of gasoline in Western Pennsylvania is $3.89.
