Whatever that chunk is, it was moving at high speed from the left. The driver did not back into something, or the broken edges of the part would not be deeply embedded in the sheet metal of the car. Another clue is the "R" in Chevrolet. In a backing accident it's not likely that "R" would still be there. Third clue is the relative material strengths. Auto sheet metal is much flimsier than the heavy casting portion of the mystery object. In a backing accident, a part as strong-looking as the broken casting would be unlikely to break apart and embed that deeply into the car. Finally, there are no other broken fragments of the casting in evidence in the vehicle, and no bumper abrasions at all.
Forensics can be fun. I wonder what really happened?
