UP9989's dynamic brake assembly disintegrated Monday night while the unit was passing through Palo Alto on the Mission Bay Turn.

Tony Johnson has a video he shot of just such a thing happening. I believe it's also on YouTube. Maybe he'll post a link to it. A similar incident happened a number of years ago when a DB assembly disintegrated on a unit of a westbound SP train that was descending Beaumont Pass in Southern California. A large piece came through the windshield of an automobile travelling on San Timeteo Canyon Road, resulting in a fatality to the driver. Not as unusual as you might think. Might make you think twice about where you stand when a train's passing.
