Thanks all. I hadn't thought of an air starter, but that makes sense. Compressed air in the tank is sort of like juice in a battery after all, and doesn't care what kind of main generator/alternator you're using , and it's there anyway so you're not adding much complication to the system. Only problem is that the tank presumably leaks down after a while, but then you can have flat batteries too and it's probably easier to "jump-start" the air in the field with another locomotive than the batteries.

The point about stop-start systems is interesting. Mechanical dept probably isn't a fan of regular DC starter motors in that application. Even for cars, automatic stop-start systems are mostly in hybrids that have big (20 or more hp continuous) electric motors in the driveline and suitable batteries anyway, or for the non-hybrid setups the whole battery-alternator-starter system has to be considerably beefier than standard.
