Growing up about 100 yards from the Newhall St. crossing of the SP in San Jose, the air horns were used when the engines were equipped with them. The steam whistles on those engines were used mostly to signal the crew.

I don't recall hearing 4449's air horn at all on this trip but on the return from Montana I did hear it a lot as they ran thru the thick fog south of Spokane around Cheney. It really cut thru the fog and made it sound as if the train was on top of us.
