When I first saw this series of photos, one of the locations I wanted to see was the house I grew up in in the 40s, 50s and 60s. It was at 1654 - 31st Avenue, between Lawton & Moraga. I remember seeing a City inspection permit with the built date "1938" on it. Sure enough, in photo #138 our house is near the edge of the sand dunes of the Sunset District. The photo shows Lawton Elementary School a half block away, where I went to school. The empty block three blocks to the right (east in the photo would eventually become Sunset Playground, where the City built a giant indoor basketball gym and other assorted buildings for recreation. I spent many years there playing basketball and softball.

Even going into the sixties there were a few parcels of sand dune properties not yet developed. It was a great time to live in The City.
