They were one of the numerous modifications made when the units were remanufactured by M-K for MARC commuter service. The core units were retired B&O F-units. MARC's model designation for them after rebuilding was F9PHA. The primary reason for this pilot design appears to be to accommodate the H.E.P. connections.
