Your strategies certainly sound like my own. I recently rode the TriMet Red Line all the way out to PDX for the first time. I was going to go right up to one of the TSA guards, present my ID, and just inform him of my intention to take pictures. Then I thought......nah, I really did not need to push it. I did do the same though at a St. Paul Minn. refinery to a security guard who was guarding the rail gate. I told him I was going to take pictures of the train switching the refinery. He said OK as long as I didn't get the refinery in the picture! I then told him that was the whole point.
I did not enjoy the rest of my day, thinking for sure he would call the FBI.
