SP LA had a major steam scrap metal/dismantling operation at the top of the Old Shops, now the new Shops/ UP Intermodal off of Mission Road, near where the I-5 crosses over today. This is pictured in the LA book by Mullally...

Purdy Mojave was the where much SP equipment went to die during my time. Also a lot of engines were delivered for parts, scrap, and an occasional rebuild to chrome crank in Alhambra. Hugo Proller on Terminal Island scrapped a lot of equipment in the mid fifties, including many PE cars.
