When UP ran unit ethanol trains to Selby, Ca.(SF Bay Area, East Bay), they ran one or two buffer cars on the head end. Never more than that, certainly not five buffer cars. Mostly the aforementioned obsolete 100 ton hoppers.
What are the actual regulations regarding unit oil moves versus ethanol moves, and is there any difference in regulation between a unit train versus a cut of these tank cars in a manifest?
