I heard a rumor that the Oregon Pacific Railroad had sold their NW-5 to a party who will be sadly scrapping it next week. I went out to Milwaukie to get some final pictures, and Dick Samuels had kindly (not for me personally, but for a photo shoot yesterday) coupled up the NW-5 to his GMD-1 allowing for an interesting comparison shot of two EMD branchline roadswitchers...built for a very similiar purpose, in a similar area, but for two different railroads.
Here's a gallery of some of those final pictures.
Thanks for the memories...I would have loved to see it saved, preserved and restored - it would have made an awesome tourist railroad locomotive (especially with the steam generator) - but I didn't have the money. No ill feelings towards anyone here, the locomotive probably should have been scrapped 25 years ago, so thanks to Mr. Samuels for doing his best to keep it alive as long as we had. There are two other NW-5s preserved elsewhere.
