Note that the "new update" linked in the original post is nearly 3 months old.

It seems highly unlikely that the commission that manages the fairgrounds property cares about the significance of one giant piece of scrap metal over another. If they wanted the plot of land for a more profitable use then everything including the Big Boy would be looking for a new home. The focus on the Big Boy is purely a marketing strategy the group has a longtime investment in. They would probably get much more exposure with an orchestrated "Farewell to the Big Boy" promotional campaign involving local media.
