This could actually become a common sight in the future.

Many of you have probably heard of plans to install a connector track between the UP Martinez Sub and the BNSF Stockton Sub where the two cross over just north of the BART yard in Richmond. The primary reason for this being to allow BNSF stack trains traveling to and from the Port of Oakland to access the Martinez Sub without having to endure miles of 10 mph running through Richmond on the RPRC. The City is also a primary backer of the project as they do not want the slow moving stack trains tying up all the grade crossing, especially since they often stop to adjust the many hand throw switches on the RPRC.

Anyway, I have heard from a reliable source that Caltrans wants to move the San Joaquins to this line once the connector is in place. They would still be able to stop at Richmond but would miss Martinez. Apparently there have already been meetings with BNSF about putting CTC islands at the Rheeme, Collier, and Maltby sidings.
