Tim, trestles on the Vernonia branch line were used but it wasn't NP unless you're somehow thinking of the NP's half-and-half ownership with the GN of the SP&S. At that time it was the Eighth Subdivision of the SP&S that extended 38.5 miles from United Junction to Vernonia.
I had to laugh when I saw the spam prevention code that appeared to make this post. The five letters "UKKNP" need only a "Y" in front of them to pretty well describe the opinion of many SP&S employees toward the NP in comparison to the other parent line. Having run passenger on both the NP and SP&S main lines between Pasco and Spokane (and freight on various NP branch lines after the 1970 merger) I can tell you there was a vast difference between the two. The James J. Hill-built SP&S made the NP look like a turkey trail as aptly described by the overlay grade chart on pages 24 and 25 of Bruce Kelly's article in the July 1987 TRAINS magazine. A map of the two parallel lines is on pages 28 and 29 of the June 1987 issue.
