How does going via Dumbarton and Altamont make the ride any shorter than via Pacheco? Is it actually shorter?

Isn't the Altamont route only favored because it offers the possibility of stops in Pleasanton/Livermore, which defeats the goal of 2:40? San Jose is much more entitled to a mainline stop than some entitled far flung suburbs that don't even really deserve BART stops.
