Define "far from pristine". If you mean faded paint and missing parts from the diesels, you're right, as many of the diesel locomotives reportedly were stripped of usable parts before being sent to CSRM (if not earlier) and the railroad also didn't repaint or clean up many of the locomotives (if any).
The steam locomotives and motor car M190, however, were 100% complete amd in decent mechanical condition when sent to CSRM, and the steam locomotives were kept lubricated and occasionaly "exercised" to avoid flat spots on the drivers and wheelsets while they were stored in the Belen roundhouse. M190's prime mover would've needed an overhaul or complete rebuild (as would have the main generator and traction motors), but it could have been restored to service without too much difficulty if ATSF had wanted or CSRM had been able to, and the same was true of the steam locomotives. Not anymore though, and that most certainly is not ATSF's fault.
Keep in mind, too, that CSRM could have offered any part of the collection to other museums when ATSF didn't keep its end of the bargain, and should have done so ASAP. While I'm more willing than Drew to give CSRM's management the benefit of the doubt, I am not willing to excuse their failure to even consider that option and allow the two locomotives that closed out steam operations on the Santa Fe, or what was the direct ancestor of the "one-spot twins", or the rest of the Santa Fe collection that wasn't restored and placed on display to deteriorate further and be vandalized for so many years.
("For the record", I'm currently involved wih the restoration of ATSF 2926 - and have been for over five years - and have spoken with people who've visited the aforementioned locomotives when they were still in Belen and seen photos of them there, so I'm not just some foamer who's blowing smoke rings out his arse.)
