For what it's worth: Probably the best reading on the early history of the PRB is Fred Frailey's landmark Nov. 1989 article in Trainsmagazine. That issue devoted 24 pages to the PRB, with illustrations by the late Gary J. Beonson.

Another reason for revisiting the article--I carried a photocopy with me on my first few visits to the PRB--is to look at how much has changed there just since 1989.
