Possibly you're confusing this with the BNSF crews wwho were required to be qualifed on the extreme north end of UP's Coast Sub between Elmhurst and Newark/San Jose, after BNSF acquired trackage rights there as a condirion of the SP/UP merger. Additionally, for a time the crews that worked BNSF's Warm Springs Local were also supposed to be qualified between Elmhurst and Newark, in case the dispatcher needed to run them that way.

For clarity, the BNSF trains that have been operating on the Coast Line have UP crews.
