Around 1996, a BNSF RFE from Richmond rode the head end of #14 down to SBA in order to start the process of qualifying a few BNSF crews to operate some detour trains down the Coast. Everything was "no problem" until he saw the grades from Cuesta to SLO, whereupon he killed the idea of BNSF crews getting qualified beyond San Jose.
