More South African Garratts

Here are a few more pix of preserved and operational Garratts in South Africa to go with the GMAM pic posted above. The GMAM's by the way were built from 1954-1958, so they are modern machines by steam engine standards. This is a bit more complicated than my original test, will be interesting see how this works.

Here is a GF, dating from 1927-8. A much more "old fashioned" machine than the GMAM's. This GF is preserved at Pietermaritzburg by the Umgeni Steam Railway group. I think it is currently undergoing repairs.

The next is a two-foot gauge NGG11 dating from 1925. This still operates on the Paton's Country Railway tourist line.

Finally, an NGG16 built in, would you believe, 1968. It operates on the Sandstone Estates preservation operation.

The running gear on the two-foot gauge machines looks the innards of a Swiss watch to me.

A sad note about South Africa. Transnet recently closed the Cape-Natal branch which at one time regularly hosted GMAM charters, and was a steeply graded line where they were regularly used in the old days. So while perhaps three GMAM's and at least one GF may be serviceable in South Africa, between line closures and the general difficulty of dealing with Transnet, the opportunities for actually running are becoming more and more limited.
