If I may add here, tractive effort stays the same as it is a function of boiler pressure, driver
diameter along with bore & stroke of the cylinders. What does lessen when water and fuel are
consumed is adhesion. This is one of the trade-offs when using this type of locomotive and
that includes geared locomotives along with tank engines. When full of water especially, most
all of that weight is over the drivers, but when you get a long ways from the last tank and
need a drink, that's about the time that the engine tends to get more slippery.
