When I drove along the Tennessee Pass line in Colorado in 1995, I heard a maintainer call in that someone had stolen the solar panels off some lineside device -- for the second time in a month -- in a fairly remote area. Yes, in 1995 that line was still active, though it did not have a huge amount of traffic. (I assume that the solar panels were used to charge batteries powering something signal related.)
